How common were mirror in Middle Earth?

How common do you think mirrors were in Middle Earth, specifically in Gondor? The modern mirror wasn't invented until 1835, I believe, but it seems odd that the higher born people would have only water as a way of seeing their reflection. Also, the Elves undoubtedly had some sort of mirror-like thing. How else would they see to fix their hair? Smile
