It seems that most of the eight Aratar had their "province" or field of influence: Manwe: wind and air, Varda: stars, Ulmo: seas, Yavanna: flora etc. ... did no one care for the poor dumb beasts?

I suppose you could argue that Orome covers that with the "delights in horses and hounds"bit, and to some extent Nessa and Vana as well, but you're right, it doesn't really to be something on which anyone fully concentrates.

Maybe caring for animals is a bit more specialized, and spread out among the lower ranks as well? Nessa gets deer, Vana has a thing with the birds, so and so gets cats and hamsters, this other guy has all the crawly things under rocks...

I think Yavanna was responsible for the animals as well as the plants, although the Silmarillion associates her more with plants than animals.

In chapter 2 of the Silmarillion, Yavanna goes to Manwe when she learns about the creation of the dwarves. At one point she says;

"But the kelvar can flee or defend themselves..."

In the appendix, kelvar is described as an Elvish word meaning animals or things that move.

No wonder they could defend themselves. They were all bullet proof.

Tevildo gets cats.

I can't wait to see what you do with that bit of information, Vlad.

I think I have a few of his minions in my house; I'll have to consult with them. Wink

Was Tevildo a form of Sauron's or a separate being? Can't remember.

The sources I looked at (yes, I had to look it up) said separate being, though one insisted that the character wasn't canon at all, so I think there may be more than one possible interpretation.

Thanks, Gang, I think I can equivocate authoratatively now. Wink

No, really, thanks. I like to be 'right' more than I like to be poetic so I appreciate knowing I aught to delete a few words.

Cheers,

NB
