After several requests, we're going to open an original fic archive.

We would like some help to break it down, if you please - like how to subdivide it and anything else you might think of.

Of course, we'll need to put a big warning and disclaimer on the door so authors understand what web publishing entails should they want to get picked up by a paying publisher later on.

Comment below if you're interested in giving a hand or have your ideas/needs looked at.

Cheers,

do. & Rob

Thank-you Do and Robbie!

Could I ask for a sword and sorcery type fantasy section?

A big disclaimer is a good idea. I know that I can't submit an original story for publication after it's been posted on the web, but new writers may not.

What about advertisement-type links? That is, say I wrote a short piece, posted it here, and then included links at the end of it where folks could go to buy other works? Would that be cheesy and annoying? (I don't want to mis-step on the etiquette here.)

Also, how can we help out?

I'll offer any and all help I can. I'm not a pro, but I've been beating myself bloody in the industry so might have some helpful insight.

Halath asked for a sword and sorcery type fantasy section.

I'm assuming it will be an "original" archive and (at least to start) all the stories will be lumped together in that archive. (like the Tolkien archive has humor and romance and drama all together)

other than that, I think I'd prefer to have a write in rather than a drop down to define genre/sub-genre. (puhlease ... I have a paranormal religious horror bit of flash fiction that did well in several contests) Wink

I assume we'd have the same star rating and review system here as the rest of the archive?

an "if you loved this" paypal button would be nice although from what I understand from authors that have them elsewhere it tends to be a very slim bit of income.(**)

I like viv's idea about links to outside works. At this point, I only have a non-fiction available but like the little ant, I still have high hopes and every link helps.

- viv, I'll also plug the banner ad that runs at the top of the archive. I've had my horse pages up there off an on for about three years and get a fair amount of traffic. Not as much now as when it was new, but I do see the clicks coming through.

** one archive I remember offered a percent of the story free and then a charge to read the rest of it. Authors set the free percent of the story and the price. I don't know how well it did over the long term. I'll poke around and see if I can find it again. Although I suspect that would be more of a major programming issue than you might want to do.

Would you also like general ideas as to what categories (main and sub-) the archive may have, or do you have that already sorted out?

haha! have been tempted to clean it up and revamp, although that would put it out of the flash word count, that won't matter here.

No, that's it. For the Original Work/Fic/Story archive - which would stand alone just like the VV one does or say Tolkien or 300 - we're not too sure how to break it down.

Tolkien as The Silm, Hobbit, AU, xover, etc. while all the TV/movies/books/games are broken down purely into general, xover, poems, etc.

Do we just follow that pattern for original fics or do you, guys, have something else in mind? Should we have the whole drama, humour, action, adventure, etc. options on that level? Because obviously xover or AU won't apply since it's original fic...

Do we just do it like a bookstore does? drama, action, thriller, horror, etc.?

Thanks for you input.

do.

I have a habit of coming up with story premises that my subconscious presents to me in my sleep. It's always the most creative that way...for some reason =P Sometimes they're not even fanfic based =D I would say this would be a fun addition to the archives.I look forward to seeing what people come up with.

I'd have a suggestion as to the possible categories of the OF archive. I thought it could be divided as follows:

Main categories:

Historical fiction
Modern day (+/- 20 years)
Science fiction
Fantasy

Sub-categories:

(in each of the above)

Drama
Thriller
Humor
Horror
Romance
Action

Perhaps a more specific note could be added by the author, like Sulriel suggested? Then we could have a story described as in:

Historical --> Thriller --> Political

or

Modern day --> Romance --> Erotica

What do you think?

I like that!

Need to check with Rob to see if we can have that many levels...

Cheers for this.

Keep 'em coming, folks. Even a name for that archive would be nice!

do.

Very Happy

Thanks! Glad to be of help.

It's a great idea to have an OF archive, and I really look forward to it (not that I have written tons of O-fics, but I have ideas and that's a pretty good start, no? Smile).

That would be great to be able to pick a genre and sub-genre if he could do two levels. I think anything to help interest the readers is all good.

As far as a name ... what about "Original Scrolls" since the main archive is "Open Scrolls"
