Would it be OOC for Arwen to yell at her daughter?
And,
Would an Elvish child/teen -even a Hlaf-Elven one- be rebellious?
Bet you can guess what I'm writing. Evil or Very Mad

I'm so not the authority in all things 'Elf', but I personally find it hard to imagine an elf behaving like a teenage human (and what are the teenage years given their lifespan?). But that could be just me. Smile

Maybe somewhat impetuous in their younger years but they all look so together and serene. Does it just come with a thousand years of living?

do. (who hasn't read much canon work about the Elves)

Ultimately I don't think elvin parents are all that different from human ones, save perhaps a trifle more patience. Yelling at a child one day is probably inevitable regardless of the person's background. And, if you're in movie verse for LotR, there's precedent for Arwen doing entirely uncannon things, like riding Glorfindel's horse to the outskirts of her father's land (and beyond) with 5 Nazgul in the neighborhood... basically the entire first movie has her somewhat OOC from the books. I'd say, some fifteen to twenty years down the road from the trilogy, if she's simply had it with a high-spirited or defiant child, yelling at her isn't OOC.

Elves reach maturity (they would seem approximately 18 then) at the age of 50. I deduce from that, that they are small and rebellious longer than humans, and therefor test their parents' patience more and longer. Now elves do have tons of patience (comes with being immortal, I think) but I don't think that their patience running out on a certain moment is that unlikely...

I suspect the capacity to yell depends on the elf. Glorfindel = yeller, Gil-Galad: yeller, Elrond -not a yeller. Arwen in the books always seems most serene and patient, also planful (taking years to weave Aragorn's banner, in secret, e.g. I wld not expect yelling from her.

I myself don't like fics where elves behave like modern humans.

Totally agree on this. I love writing elfs and figureing out ways to make them more elvish than human. if you're going to write them humnan, just make your characters human. i'm not saying elfs are without fault - they're not by any means. hot-tempered and passionate. but I don't think they would be in the case of raising their children.

Oh I don't know, throw in some Lego in the mix and no matter if you're an elf/dwarf/half elf/men/hobbit/orc... I'd yell and it would make perfect sense to me! Wink
