In other words, what a piece of clothing that men of ME wore on their legs was called? Most fanfic writers go with "breeches", but I don't think it's quite right. For Hobbits, possibly; for Men? I cannot imagine, say, Aragorn in pants that are just below his knees (okay, I can, but it makes me jiggle). "Trousers" is a more generic word, but it sounds a tad too modern.

Suggestions?

You know, I can't even remember whether that article of clothing was specifically mentioned in the book... will go check & tell you tomorrow.

The LOTR Costume research page (http://www.alleycatscratch.com/lotr/ -- Very useful!!) describes Aragorn as wearing leather trousers, possibly black, and they assume trousers for the Rangers. Trousers is their word. (They don't mention Boromir's pants at all Embarassed ) They describe the hobbits as wearing 'double button fly-front breaches'.

They base their descriptions on the film costumes. Check them out. They have a breakdown of each major character's costume with good vocabulary.

A quick trip through my dictionary leads me to believe that Breeches are always only to the knee or just below; As an american I think I'd call 'em britches, or knickers but then the brits among us might snicker.

Hope this is helpful.

Wow, nifty site:)

And knickers make me snicker too, no matter that I couldn't pass for a brit to save my life:)

I tend to think of what Legolas wore under his tunic as leggings.

Do you ever think about anything else besides smutty stuff BB?

As for me, I have to agree with Roisin that I prefer the term leggings. In my mind, they could be trouser-like in design.

I'm not sure about using leggings because they make me think of 80's hair bands ...

... not that there's anything wrong with that ... no one wore leather leggings like Axl Rose Twisted Evil !

I´d rather think about what´s underneath those leggings/trousers/legwear, than what to actually call them! Wink

Especially if said leggings/trousers/legwear belong to our most beloved Legolas or any other scrumptious-looking elf! Twisted Evil
